Encoding Context Determines Risky Choice

چکیده
Both memory and choice are influenced by context: Memory is enhanced when encoding retrieval contexts match, swayed available options. Here, we assessed how context influences risky in an experience-based task two main experiments (119 98 participants retained, respectively) additional reported the Supplemental Material online (152 106 respectively). Within a single session, created separate presenting blocks of trials distinct backgrounds. Risky choices were dependent; given same choice, people chose differently depending on other outcomes experienced that context. Choices reflected overweighting most extreme within each local rather than global all outcomes. When tested nontrained context, according to at not retrieval. In subsequent tests, displayed biases specific contexts: Extreme from more accessible judged as frequent. These results pose challenge for theories rely guiding choice.

Reward context determines risky choice in pigeons and humans
Whereas humans are risk averse for monetary gains, other animals can be risk seeking for food rewards, especially when faced with variable delays or under significant deprivation. A key difference between these findings is that humans are often explicitly told about the risky options, whereas non-human animals must learn about them from their own experience. We tested pigeons (Columba livia) an...
متن کاملRisky choice in younger versus older adults: Affective context matters
Earlier frameworks have indicated that older adults tend to experience decline in their deliberative decisional capacity, while their affective abilities tend to remain intact (Peters, Hess, Västfjäll, & Auman, 2007). The present study applied this framework to the study of risky decision-making across the lifespan. Two versions of the Columbia Card Task (CCT) were used to trigger either affect...
متن کاملNoisy Parameters in Risky Choice
We examine the effect of variability in model parameters on the predictions of expected utility theory and cumulative prospect theory, two of the most influential choice models in decision making research. We find that zero-mean and symmetrically distributed noise in the underlying parameters of these models can systematically distort choice probabilities, leading to false conclusions. Likewise...
متن کاملEye Movements in Risky Choice
We asked participants to make simple risky choices while we recorded their eye movements. We built a complete statistical model of the eye movements and found very little systematic variation in eye movements over the time course of a choice or across the different choices. The only exceptions were finding more (of the same) eye movements when choice options were similar, and an emerging gaze b...
متن کاملRisky Weighting in Discrete Choice
This paper presents a new approach to discrete choice analysis for risky prospects. Conventional discrete choice analysis focuses on riskless prospects and does not deal with the scenario where the alternatives that the decision-makers choose from are associated with risk. In this paper, we investigate decisionmakers’ risk perception and choice behaviour in choice experiments when they are faci...
